October has flown by!!!  We have been working hard in 5th grade.  Learning new things in Math has been interesting.  We can now plot data on a line plot and analyze what it tells us!  We can also plot coordinates on a grid.  An introduction to Close Reading has helped us dig deeper into our text.  Now we are able to work on comprehending better.  In Science, we have discussed the Scientific Method.  We are ready to design and carry out scientific experiments that answer questions and solve problems.  Map reading was fun!  We are ready to learn about Early Native Americans.  In Writing, we have written our first Narrative paper.  We have also learned how to add dialogue to our writing to make it more interesting.  As you can see, things are really hopping in Room 8!

Wow!  I can't believe that we have been in school for two weeks!  We have been learning all the skills that make our classroom run efficiently and smoothly.  We have been learning how to choose "good fit" books so that we can build our reading stamina.  We have discovered that teamwork is a key component for classroom success.  Sharpening our teamwork skills has been fun (and challenging).  Daily 5/CAFE are helping us organize our Reading and Writing periods.  In Math, we have been organizing and analyzing data.  We are working very hard!

Learning doesn't always happen at school.  One way that you can help at home is to encourage your child to read at least 20 minutes every night.  We have also started our homework schedule:  Math Facts Monday, Problem Solving Tuesday, and Word Skill Wednesday.  It is important that on all assignments that students show all their thinking.

I am so happy to be working with your children this year.  If you ever have any questions or concerns, you can contact me at school at 541-437-2321.  You can also email me at
Thank you for your support in your child's education.  I know it is going to be an amazing year!

A heartfelt "Thank you" to all parents that attended Parent/Teacher Conferences.  I enjoyed talking with you about your child's education.  After setting our goals in Reading and Math, 5th grade students will write their plans on how they will work on meeting them.  These plans will then be sent home so that we are all working together to meet our goals.

The fifth grade is up and running at full speed!  I am so excited to be working with your children this year!  We are digging deep into Reading and choosing good fit books.  We LOVE our Daily 5 choices-especially Read to Self.  In Math, we are working hard at converting measurements.  Geography is awesome and so much fun!  This week will wrap up our short vowel Spelling list.

Learning does not always take place at school.  There are many things that you can do at home to help your child.  One way to help your child at home is to encourage them to read for at least 20 minutes every night.  We have also started our weekly Tuesday Problem solving homework.  When working on any problem solving assignment, students need to remember that it is important to show all of their thinking.

I am looking forward to the opportunity of working with this great bunch of students.  If you need to contact me, you may reach me at Stella Mayfield at 541-437-2321.  If it is more convenient, you may also email me at  Thank you for your support in your child's education.
